Since the nineteenth century, the inclusion
of King Afonso X’s work in the cancioneiros
(songbooks) has raised several doubts about
which compositions should be considered as
authored by the Castilian king. Such doubts
have recently reemerged, when the king was
attributed four love songs appearing in the
Cancioneiro da Ajuda alone. Following an
account of the metamorphoses undergone by
Afonso’s songbook, a reassessment is offered
here of its proper placement as well as of the
problems resulting thereof, with a view to a
clarification of the king’s work.
